Perseverance is a work of epic fantasy fiction penned by author M. C. Colon, and forms the second book of The Athanasian Realm series. Following on from the events of Deceived, we find ourselves at the Towers on the Isle of Wisdom some years after young Adicia was called upon to serve as Luminary. Returning with her friends Tavis and Gara in tow, Adicia knows that things are not right. The Towers are gone, left to ruin as bickering magic users fight amongst themselves and demon-worshippers grow stronger every day, increasing their threat. Adicia will stand up to them all and restore the society she once proudly served.

Having read Deceived recently, it was a fresh delight to return to The Athanasian Realm series, but with a totally new perspective. Author M. C. Colon wisely moves the series forward into a terrifying new reality, giving Adicia a whole new quest with no repetition of plot from the first novel. The pacing was great, delivering equally balanced exposition and action moments, with time left to continue the emotional arc of the three central characters too. I enjoyed the dialogue even better than book one, and felt that the characters’ true voices were really shining in the heat of action. Colon’s descriptions are suitably epic, with beautiful and terrifying new vistas on every page. Overall, Perseverance marks an excellent and very different sequel that continues the saga of a well built fantasy world, and is sure to please fantasy fans who enjoyed book one.
