Perspectus is a work of fiction in the fantasy, detective, and adventure subgenres, and it forms the second installment of the Exili's Excellent Elucidation Services book series. The work is suitable for mature teen and adult reading audiences and was penned by author Victoria Bastedo. Following on from the events of book one, Flintelf, Exili has a new case to solve and a new figure to protect. A 16-year-old student is being hunted by malicious force, and Exili’s deciphering feet will have to tread familiar ground at his old school to help her. What results is a case that could put Exili in way more danger than his client as the focus of the threat shifts evermore in his direction.
Author Victoria Bastedo knows how to create an immersive fantasy mystery that is sure to amaze and delight her readership with new twists in every chapter. For me personally, protagonist Exili really makes the story with his amusing wry dialogue and variety of supernatural tricks to get out of trouble and grab the upper hand. He flavors the narrative with an edgy, dangerous appeal that makes you want to dive deeper into the mystery without ever putting the book down. When you add to this a well-developed ensemble cast around our enigmatic detective, atmospheric descriptive skills, and keen sense of pacing to every twist and surprise in the plot, the result is a superbly engrossing second in the series that easily meets the high standard of the first. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Perspectus to readers who love intricate mysteries with a vivid supernatural twist, and those seeking a fantastic new series and accomplished fantasy author to fall in love with. A truly unputdownable read.
