Petunia the Unicorn Moves to the Big City by R.L. Ullman will be enjoyed by young and old. Petunia Cupcake Fluffybottom lives with her Aunt Sprinkles, her sweet little Corgi, Gumdrop, and Winston the butler. Aunt Sprinkles has just purchased a brownstone in New York City. Petunia and her aunt are exploring the sights when Petunia realizes they are the only unicorns in the city. They create quite a stir in the media and among the neighbors, some of whom aren't very welcoming. Her aunt decides to invite her neighbors to a party so they can become better acquainted, but it doesn't go quite as planned. Will Petunia and her aunt stay in New York?

Petunia the Unicorn Moves to the Big City will be loved by unicorn and rainbow fans alike! R. L. Ullman has created two strong female characters. Kids will relate to Petunia and love her special unicorn magic. What an important message for kids to hear, that despite other people's actions, you can choose to act graciously. The illustrations by Yusup Mediyan are perfect. I can see kids wanting to dress up just like Petunia with her pink hair and tail and golden horn. The illustrations are full of bright, vivid, cheerful colors. Too bad there isn't a recipe for Winston's Chocolate Chocolate Bundt cake because it sounds divine! As a former children's librarian, I know that Petunia the Unicorn Moves to the Big City will be a huge hit. One of our most frequent requests was for unicorn books and Ullman has written an outstanding one. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Petunia and Gumdrop.

It’s always difficult being the new person on the block, especially if you’re more noticeably different from everyone else. Petunia and her Auntie Sprinkles are definitely different: they’re unicorns and they’ve just moved into a posh West 81st Street neighborhood in Manhattan. Not everyone is happy about these new neighbors, especially when the two elegant unicorns attract considerable attention and people throng to West 81st Street to get a glimpse of them. Petunia’s a little concerned about all the attention and that she hasn’t seen any other unicorns like them. But Auntie Sprinkles’ profound words to Petunia are: “Just like a rainbow’s beauty comes from all of its different colors shining together, the city’s beauty comes from all of its different people living together.” This transforms into Petunia’s revelation: “We’re all different, but it’s only when we bring those differences together that the world truly shines.”

R.L. Ullman’s picture book story, Petunia the Unicorn Moves to the Big City, is a tender sweet story about differences and acceptance. Told in simple language so young readers can follow along and illustrated beautifully, using bright, bold colors, the plot evolves around Petunia and her auntie’s arrival in Manhattan and the stir they create for being so different. The author circles his theme around the important message of inclusion and equity, and how differences don’t really matter; it’s what’s inside someone that really counts. At first, Petunia wants to blend in, but, with help from her Auntie Sprinkles, she learns what’s really important is being herself and being proud of who she is, even if she looks different. Beautifully told and presented with elegant and loveable characters.
