Pete the Shark had heard so much about the open waters and he was excited to make his debut in the open aquarium waters. Pete couldn't wait to have his pictures taken with human children when they came to visit. Taffy Turtle asked him to show off his pearly whites and Goliath Tigerfish told him how to do it. He told Pete the Shark to swim up to the glass, open his mouth wide, and show off all his pointy teeth. Pete looked in the mirror and tried to do what Goliath showed him. Shrimpy thought he looked fierce smiling like that. He flashed his smile when he saw children behind the glass wall and the children got scared and ran away. Pete wondered what happened and he went and hid behind a clump of algae. The next day the same thing happened and the children refused to take pictures with him. Freddy the Frog came up with an idea but that did not work either, and whatever Pete tried to do did not work; the children still ran away. Will Pete be able to find out what happened so that the children will take pictures with him?

Pete the Shark: Picture Perfect Book 1 by Karlene J. Froling is an adorable story that conveys a good message to young readers, that of being themselves instead of trying to copy others. The illustrations are wonderful and colorful and they make the book captivating. It is a good story for read-aloud and storytelling sessions in classrooms and homes to show children the importance of being themselves instead of trying to copy others. The message comes out clearly through the character of Pete the Shark. Fun Facts at the end of the book give interesting information about sharks. Books like this are good for children as they are not only educational but also have life lessons for youngsters to practice. The story will also introduce readers to the creatures that live in an aquarium.
