Author Biography

Susanne Blumer lives on Huckleberry Farm in Upstate South Carolina with her husband and two children. A former model and city girl, Susanne became an accidental farm girl and fell in love with her new life. Her adventures on the farm are the inspiration for many of her books. As Susanne puts it, "Having a farm is like a story. Sometimes it's a comic book. Sometimes it's a horror story. But mostly it's a fairy tale." In short order, Susanne became a chicken breeder, goat wrangler, shepherdess, home school mom, donkey whisperer and fence repairer.

She has delivered stubborn lambs, ran from determined cows, and everyone at the post office calls her the Crazy Chicken Lady due to the number of chicks she has shipped and received.

In addition to chickens, the farm is home to cows, donkeys, guineas, ducks, cats, Barbados sheep, miniature Babydoll sheep, three Great Pyrenees and a pet goose named Walker. Susanne is the author of the best-selling Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love! and Wooly Meets The Chickens: Book 1 of the Huckleberry Farm series. She is also the author of the upcoming Piper Periwinkle™ books. Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love!: A Complete Kid's Guide To Keeping Chickens (Raising Backyard Chickens, Great for Children and Adults) is a nonfiction guide to raising chickens written by Susanne Blumer. The author thinks chickens can be fun pets and entertaining companions, and her book gives prospective chicken owners just about everything they need to start keeping chickens. Blumer discusses the benefits and advantages to getting hatched chicks and where to buy them, but she also provides enough information for those who would like to hatch their own baby chicks from eggs, complete with recommendations for moderately priced incubators. Blumer also introduces the various types of chickens that are available and discusses laying potential and personality differences.

Susanne Blumer's nonfiction animal guide for children and adults, Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love!: A Complete Kid's Guide To Keeping Chickens, is entertaining and informative, even if you're not thinking seriously about getting a chicken for a pet any time soon. The pictures liberally sprinkled throughout the book are both educational and amusing, and the serious topic of responsibly raising poultry is made easily accessible in this refreshingly candid and heartwarming book. Each page is filled with snippets of useful information about chickens, eggs, coops and nesting boxes. Reasons for and against having roosters are discussed at length, and I finally learned what it means when a chicken is feeling "broody"; something my chicken-raising neighbor has often complained about. There's also a useful glossary and other resources located in the back of the book. Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love! is highly recommended.

What a cute idea Susanne Blumer has come up with in Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love!: A Complete Kid's Guide To Keeping Chickens (Raising Backyard Chickens, Great for Children and Adults). A lot of children these days have no idea where their food comes from, but Susanne Blumer has put together a colorful book with adorable photographs that not only helps children understand where some of their food comes from, but helps them learn how to raise it themselves.

Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love!: A Complete Kid's Guide To Keeping Chickens is just that - a complete guide to teach kids how to raise chickens at home. Blumer takes them on a journey of learning about various chickens and their eggs as well as roosters and why they crow...'all the time.' She adds in the ideas of a rooster song and egg songs when hens lay their eggs. Children will also discover how to hatch baby chicks and how to care for them if they opt to go that route versus just gaining eggs for food. Most of the book is very easy to read and with simple language. However, occasionally there are some spots that may confuse the reader. For example, Blumer doesn't offer a very good explanation of what it means for a hen to be "broody." This would force a young reader or parent with little knowledge of chickens to have to do further research. Mind you, she does remind readers that "if [they] ever have a question or concern, Google is [their] friend."

Overall, Susanne Blumer's Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love! is appealing to the young reader's eye and their natural tendency to be drawn to critters. It is packed full of basic information, and could be a great read for children, whether or not they or their parents are interested in raising chickens of their own. Blumer has put together a children's 'how to' book that can really open their eyes, their minds and their hearts. Cock-a-doodle-doo!

Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love! by Susanne Blumer shows how raising chickens can be a lot of fun and it’s actually growing in popularity. So many people want to raise backyard chickens, but they don’t even think about how great it is for children. This book is all about why children will want to raise chickens and how it’s going to teach them so much about responsibility as well. Sure, raising hamsters is cool but it’s even cooler to have a unique pet. Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love! is all about how kids can really enjoy themselves raising chickens. It’s all about why they would want this kind of pet and how to take care of them as well.

I think this book is good for small children who may be looking for their first pet. It explains everything they need to know about raising chickens in a way that they can understand (without sounding too childish). It also helps teach them some new words and has great images that are not only real but colorful as well so kids can really see what they need to do. I like this book and I think other parents will as well (not to mention kids), although it is going to make those kids want a chicken of their own. Be warned that you may end up having to get a couple chickens of your own if you get this book. Kids will enjoy learning even more about chickens and what they need most in Pip! Zip! Hatch! Love! by Susanne Blumer.
