Jean Gill is a Welsh writer and photographer living in the south of France with a big white dog, a scruffy black dog, a Nikon D750 and a man. For many years, she taught English in Wales and was the first woman to be a secondary headteacher in Carmarthenshire. She is mother or stepmother to five children so life was hectic.
Publications are varied, including prize-winning poetry and novels, military history, translated books on dog training, and a cookery book on goat cheese. With Scottish parents, an English birthplace and French residence, she can usually support the winning team on most sporting occasions.

Plaint for Provence: 1152 Les Baux by Jean Gill is the third book in The Troubadours Quartet series. Although I have not read the previous novels in the series, I had no problem understanding what was happening. This is definitely not a standalone, but if you want to start with this novel, go ahead because this is going to be one hell of a ride. In medieval France, Estela de Matin and her lover, Dragonetz los Pros, are finally living the family life they craved. They have their son Musca and their pet dog Nici to keep their days filled with joy. They are called to Les Baux court and soon the two are in the middle of a power struggle. In the midst of a battle that could change Provence forever, these two will have to make some decisions that go against their natures. Can they do it?
I was expecting something pretty basic, to be honest. However, this is by far the best historical fiction novel I have read this year and I don’t think another novel can beat this. Plaint for Provence is the perfect title for the novel; it truly depicts the main couple of the novel and how they had to change themselves to survive. I haven’t read the previous novels, but these characters seemed well rounded and well developed. Dragonetz' character was so strong. He kept on fighting and never bowed down to his addiction, and Estela is a spitfire. Musca is adorable. I can’t wait to read the next novel and see how he grows.
