With this book the title says it all: Pleasing Your Partner: A Spiritual Guide to H.A.P.P.I.N.E.S.S. Toneal M. Jackson and her husband have been married almost ten years. For many of us that does not seem like a long time, and yet in that short period of time, she has faced almost every issue that can destroy a marriage. This book was written in hopes of offering encouragement and inspiration through the rough times. The text is based on Christian principles and scripture, leaning heavily on Proverbs 6.

Marriage is neither a partnership nor a project. Marriage is about waking up each morning and asking yourself, "What can I do today to make life better for this person?" Marriage is offering support, encouragement, and help.

Jackson cleverly uses the word HAPPINESS to guide couples down the road of marital bliss. Each chapter addresses a different letter in the word and includes a scripture for reference, a short text and discussion questions or an activity. The first section is based on the word Humility. When we are humble we place God first in our lives. Jackson continues with Assurance, Prosperity, Integrity, Newness, Endurance, Submission, and Strength.

Many readers may groan when they come to the section on Submission. Too often we interpret the word as weak. When scripture speaks of submitting, it is not a one sided deal. While wives are to submit to their husbands, so husbands are to submit to their wives. “The expectation is for the husband to treat the wife with love, respect, and compassion because this is how he would treat himself.”

Toneal uses her own experiences to assist readers in strengthening their marriage. The book is well organized, easy to understand and put in action. The activity area (questions, action, etc.) are very helpful. I plan to use this book to strengthen my marriage. Toneal’s intelligence shines through in her use of H.A.P.P,I.N.E.S.S. as the basis for this book.
