Poppy's Purpose to Prevent Pollution is a short, fun-filled adventure tale by Melissa Kay Moore aimed at raising awareness about the preservation and protection of oceanic ecosystems amongst kids. Poppy, a harbor porpoise, enjoys her ocean life swimming and playing with her sea friends; Terry, a sassy sea turtle, and Clay, a brilliant blue crab. One fine day, after having tons of fun playing tag with her friends, Poppy is hungry. While searching for food, Poppy and her friends come across plastic bottles, straws, bags, face masks, and all kinds of non-sea things floating in the water. A plastic straw injures Terry's nose, and the friends find themselves surrounded by garbage. Now, Poppy and Clay wait as Terry swims to the shore to seek humans' help to get the straw out of his nose.

Author Melissa Kay Moore tells a merry adventure tale with some vital lessons on the conservation of oceanic wildlife. Filled with imaginative illustrations, colorful characters, and humorous dialogue, Poppy's Purpose to Prevent Pollution is an entertaining short story for kids that sheds light on one of the most significant environmental issues humans are facing today. Poppy is the main protagonist, a lovable porpoise who can't get enough playtime to spend with her friends, Terry the sea turtle and Clay the crab. The friendship and the humorous back and forth between the three form the bedrock of the narrative. I thoroughly enjoyed Poppy's Purpose to Prevent Pollution. Books like these help raise awareness about environmental issues amongst children at a young age. Highly recommended.

Emily-Jane Hills Orford

Poppy is a harbor porpoise. Her best friends are Terry the sea turtle and Clay, a blue crab. They love playing in their ocean playground. One day, they find themselves in an ocean full of trash: plastic containers, plastic bags, straws – all kinds of human garbage. Terry gets a straw stuck in his nose. Nothing Poppy or Clay do can help get the straw out of Terry’s nose. They swim to the beach and encourage Terry to seek help from the humans along the shore. Will Terry get help? And what will happen to Poppy’s ocean playground? Will it ever be safe again?

Melissa Kay Moore’s picture book story, Poppy’s Purpose to Prevent Pollution, is a clever tool for teaching young readers the importance of caring for our oceans. The story is told in simple language, suitable for young readers, and it emphasizes the importance of friendship, not only for playing but also for troubleshooting and helping one another when in trouble. The plot follows Poppy and her friends as they cavort underneath the ocean. When encountering the human trash, there are some traumatic moments as they try to help Terry. With bright, bold, colorful illustrations, the story moves along well. The author has chosen an interesting font for the text and some of the words are highlighted by using different colors. At the end of the book, there is a list of questions to encourage discussion, a glossary of ocean pollution facts and terms, and a list of environmental awareness days. This story is entertaining, engaging, and educational.
