Author Biography

Sarah A Vogler was born in Brisbane, Australia, where she spent her childhood climbing trees, wrestling her three brothers, and watching Xena: The Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. It was these two TV shows that sparked Sarah’s interest in Greek mythology and saw her spend entire days sitting by her bedroom window, waiting for a pegasus to swoop out of the sky and take her on an adventure worthy of Homer. When it was clear a pegasus wasn’t going to rescue her from her dull life, Sarah turned to writing her own adventures.

Poseidon's Academy by Sarah A Vogler is a young adult epic fantasy that will thrill fans of Rick Riordan and readers who enjoy Greek mythology. Hailey is plunged into a world and a conflict she never envisaged for her first year in high school — a world of monsters, dangerous sea nymphs, and other awful creatures. She can’t accept the fact that she is the only Zeus in over a century and gifted with unimaginable powers. A child whose only dream is a normal life is at the center of a prophecy. Can she wield her powers properly and save the world from impending doom?

The narrative begins with unusual events — kids down the street displaying unusual powers. But the protagonist holds a letter in her hand, one she is hesitant to open because it will tell her whether she’s been accepted to the coveted Poseidon’s Academy. The author wastes no time in telling readers about the setting. So, from the very first page, the reader is introduced to the protagonist and to the mythical hints of the story. We quickly learn that Poseidon’s Academy isn’t an ordinary high school but an underwater palace that had once been the Olympian god Poseidon’s home.

Fast-paced and neatly written, Poseidon's Academy is a powerful and gripping story filled with surprises. Readers will love the adventure, the intense action, the strong conflict, and the deft handling of character. Sarah A Vogler creates a fascinating world for readers to enjoy and uses the elements of nature so masterfully to weave the fabric of her story. Hailey is an ingeniously developed character. When readers meet her, she is, curiously, an ordinary girl, but as the story progresses, her personality comes out and her character develops with the mission forced on her. The humor enriches the narrative and the protagonist’s stream of consciousness makes for great entertainment. This is a page-turner for fans of epic fantasy.

Poseidon’s Academy is a work of young adult fiction by author Sarah A Vogler, and falls into the fascinating world of modern mythology fiction. Borrowing from the old Greek myths of gods, monsters and the power of the sea, the concept of the tale is the idea that Zeus’s ancient powers have been passed down through humanity after humans killed their gods many moons ago. Now, the power of Zeus resides in normal high school freshman Hailey Woods, a just-turned teen who only desires an ordinary life. But when the sea nymphs propose to resurrect the gods, destroying the human world in the process, Hailey has no choice but to step up and face her destiny.

This is a really interesting coming of age tale for the younger end of the young adult spectrum; in fact I’d almost rather recommend it as a middle grade read. That said, Hailey is a likeable hero with relatable concerns for the young audience, particularly in her refusal to have destiny and adult responsibility thrown at her when she didn’t ask for it. That said, when danger rears its head, Hailey sucks up her teenage insecurities and does her best to do what’s asked of her. There are plenty of thrills along the way and author Sarah A Vogler describes the creatures and powers of ancient Greece beautifully. Overall, the snappy dialogue and exciting re-conceptualization of the Greek myths make Poseidon’s Academy an enjoyable read for teens and pre-teens who love mythology, history, action and danger.

Poseidon's Academy by Sarah A Vogler is a young adult mythology and fairy tale story that would appeal most to a mixed audience of teenagers and young adults. Hailey Woods is a thirteen-year-old girl whose greatest wish in life is to simply be a normal teenager at Poseidon’s Academy without having to worry about being a ultimate weapon or a hero. Yet for all her wishes, Hailey is a Zeus and even if her powers don’t work at Poseidon’s Academy, that won’t stop the prophecy from being fulfilled and young Hailey being forced to save the world. When the moment comes, does Hailey have what it takes to be the Zeus that could save the world or will her desire for normality be the weight that drowns her and the world with her?

Move over Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood and make room for Hailey Woods in Poseidon's Academy by Sarah A Vogler! I have to say that this book did remind me a bit of the Percy Jackson series, yet I liked the way that it had a female protagonist and that the book did not have anywhere near the same plot or setting as that series. The author did a simply spectacular job in not allowing this book to become a rewrite or a mirror of another series, but instead made this story into a unique and compelling read. I found Hailey to be a very likable character that I could not help but sympathize with as all she wanted was to be normal, yet she had the weight of the world on her young shoulders. Overall, I enjoyed reading Poseidon's Academy, though I really wish I could have read this book back when I was in high school as it would have easily been one of my favorite books!
