Professional Patient: A Memoir of Bipolar Disorder by author Leesa Abbott, Psy.D, is an intriguing take on mental disorders from not only a professional psychologist, but also someone who has personally suffered numerous mental disorders. The book presents a candid, raw and motivational look at mental health issues from both points of view – those suffering and those giving treatment. The author recounts her own personal journey with debilitating health issues, including depression, eating disorders, mental breakdowns, and substance abuse, which resulted in countless doctor visits, medical interventions, social stigmas, an emotional roller coaster and more. Readers will be intrigued with how the material is presented from the point of view of someone who has not only lived it, but is now helping treat it.

I found Professional Patient: A Memoir of Bipolar Disorder a tough read (because of the subject matter) but also inspiring at the same time. It was heartbreaking to read about all the health issues the author has had to deal with since she was a young girl. Even in present day, there is a certain shame and stigma when suffering mental issues and I applaud the author for sharing her story in such a candid fashion. I think one of the reasons that Leesa Abbott has made it as far as she has is because of the support and encouragement from her husband, family and friends. I would recommend Professional Patient: A Memoir of Bipolar Disorder by Leesa Abbott to anyone who is suffering a mental breakdown (or knows someone suffering mental issues) to get a motivational and inspirational look into these life-changing health issues.
