Quantum State by M. Black is a science fiction novel in the style of The Hunger Games and Divergent. The main character, Masha, has grown up in a small community where their lives are dictated by MAQS, Machine At Quantum State. This high-functioning computer dictates their careers, their spouses, and most every other part of their lives. Masha’s mother died trying to break free from their regimented world. Because of this, Masha, along with her best friend, Esfir, is determined to follow her mother’s path and escape. This drive is fueled by the fact that Masha and Esfir are in love, but MAQS has assigned them to other people. Masha’s situation is compounded by Kazimir, the son of the Keeper who killed her mother. As Masha and Esfir work to discover the truth behind MAQS, their journey heads in a direction they never would have guessed and Masha is forced to question all she believes.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Quantum State by M. Black. While it has similarities to The Hunger Games and Divergent, the plot is unique and refreshing. It may seem like the usual young adult love triangle, but goes farther and deeper than that. Masha’s journey is a discovery of herself and the world around her. As she questions her perspective of her childhood memories, she must face her own fears and loyalties. The writing drives the plot forward as well, and is visually appealing. I highly recommend this book to all those who are fans of the dystopian genre.
