Stephen Akey's bittersweet love odyssey started with a personal ad in Village Voice, which he described as "the local precursor to today’s online dating sites." Even though he was a "gainfully employed" and "fairly good-looking" New York resident, finding love for 24-year-old Stephen could not be achieved through conventional means because of one reason—his shyness. Like many love stories, Stephen and Lucy's relationship began with an exciting discovery of the hidden mysteries, like buried treasure, in each other and the prospect of a beautiful future together. Eventually, the two lovers got married, explored art, made and lost friends, and created both good and bad memories over a period of 23 years. Raccoon Love depicts the story of two strangers who found love in each other but were driven apart by unfortunate circumstances.

A wistful, profound, and artistic narrative, Raccoon Love immerses readers in a touching love story between two art enthusiasts. Stephen Akey narrates his story in poetic language and smooth, flowing writing that guarantees an enjoyable and immersive experience. I found the deeply introspective memoir relatable in different areas, like the pain of breaking up with a loved one, and the reality of being an artist who primarily enjoys creating and sharing art and regards commercial success as secondary. Since I had a most wonderful time reading Raccoon Love, I strongly recommend it to all lovers of art, artists, and anyone who has ever been in love or dreams of, one day, experiencing it. Stephen Akey does in one book what takes many authors several books to accomplish. Raccoon Love has converted me into an avid fan of his work, and I look forward to discovering more.
