If you'd like a book where you can sit back and relax and enjoy a few laughs at the same time, pick up a copy of Stuart Tobin's Rash Decisions and Growth Experiences. There is a subtitle From the Best Little Warthouse in Kentucky which has a story all its own. Author Tobin is a dermatologist who has also lectured as a college professor. Over a thirty-year career in medicine, he has accumulated numerous stories of interactions with patients. Tobin take a less serious approach to doctor-patient relationships, which oftentimes has the effect of relaxing the patient under stressful conditions.

Those who have had to undergo nail-biting medical procedures will appreciate the humor Tobin shares in Rash Decisions and Growth Experiences. One of my favorite stories is a chapter entitled Rural Settings and Urban Prejudices. In this chapter, the author says he never trusts the judgment of patients named after cities with a population exceeding a million people. He goes on to explain how he once treated a Kentucky native who farmed tobacco. Not a sophisticated man, Dallas and Dr. Tobin could not seem to get on the same conceptual page. There was one speech misinterpretation after another until, finally, Dr. Tobin simply left the examination room, confident in his prejudice against people named after large cities. For the most part, you'll meet "down home" average people who run into circumstances requiring professional services. And when they do, it's obvious they appreciate the personal and homey approach of Stuart Tobin, M.D.!
