Refining Lord Preston is a Regency romance with an enemies-to-lovers theme. Laura Beers places her characters in a situation not unlike many Jane Austen novels. Lady Emma Brooksbank is a twenty-two-year-old woman who is not interested in marriage after she developed unrequited feelings for a man who married another. She enjoys archery and her romantic freedom, even though her mother pressures her to wed. Isaac Cameron, Lord Preston, is Emma’s rival in archery, often challenging her to do better. He agrees to his father’s request that he marry, and he seeks the help of Lady Kate Berkshire, a renowned matchmaker. Lady Berkshire agrees to take him on as a client if Emma joins her classes too. Lord Preston and Emma end up in a situation where they are forced to spend time together and understand one another better. Even though he has a strained relationship with Emma, Lord Preston asks her to help him win the affection of his two nieces, who he just met and rescued from a workhouse.

Refining Lord Preston is an enjoyable book in the Proper Regency Matchmakers series, with romance, drama, and a little humor in the pages as the characters develop feelings that they weren’t aware were there all along. Laura Beers uses the terminology of the time without bogging down the reader with elegant, little-known words and phrases. I didn’t know about “Bow Street Runners” or “bluestockings” until I read this story and looked at their meanings. The writing was modern, but the setting of the novel was clear about the viewpoints of the men and women throughout the story, making the book highly readable.
