Gail Hickman, a Canadian Native American from the Okanagan Indian Band, writes a collection of meaningful poems in Reflections of the Soul. The poetry is divided into four categories: Family, Friendship, Condolences and Life Experiences. Hickman expresses: “We become our own art painting, a lifestyle of our choosing.” She asks the reader to take a journey through her eyes and to be inspired by her feelings, experiences and observations of life and people. This collected work encompasses decades. It is full of memories and inspiration to uplift your heart, heal your soul, and challenge your ideology. To add clarity to her poetry, Hickman includes illustrations by various artists and includes personal photos as well.

Rich in culture and insight, Reflections of the Soul by Gail Hickman portrays the present and the past of the Okanagan lifestyle. Encouraging and relatable, her thoughts are blessings; words of thanksgiving woven into poetic thoughts and ultimately placed on paper. These poems are meant to be cherished for generations for those who take them to heart. Most of the poetry is free verse, but a few are written with a subtle rhyme scheme. As the author, Hickman is the speaker of her poems. The mood of the poetry is often somber, at times almost proverbial, but always includes a touch of inspiration. She openly shares her religious views and native mystical philosophies in a manner to promote hope and well being. Many of the poems were born out of things Hickman viewed or portions of history that inspired her to pen her ideas and thoughts.
