Resonance by S. Alex Martin is the second entry in the Recovery series, an excellent story that follows the life and adventures of Arman Lance in the Embassy Program. The Belvun planet is being laid to waste by drought, firestorms, and an advancing desert. Every effort to save the planet has failed. Now, Arman must follow General Orcher’s orders, and travel to the far-off city of Orvad by the Ocean, and to Daliona where life is plentiful, and find a solution to the impending crisis. Can he overcome the challenges that are thrown on his way? Brace yourselves for an exciting adventure across a wonderful setting.

This is not your run-of-the-mill sci-fi read, with sophisticated characters and complex concepts, but the ideas that drive the story with the technology are cool, as are the characters. The story starts with action, an explosion, and from then on the characters develop around the crisis on the planet. I enjoyed the fact that the protagonist matured from a self-absorbed young man who seems lovesick into a responsible adult ready to take risks and work hard to improve the life of the planet. It’s no longer about his feelings, but about the fate of his world.

S. Alex Martin has a unique writing style and his voice comes out compellingly. Readers will root for most of the characters because they are very real and easy to relate to. The points of view come across beautifully and neatly in the narrative and the author seems to have a unique gift for first person narrative. Resonance is a work of great imagination, with the kind of technology that seems real. The great writing, infused with wonderful and natural-sounding dialogues, vivid descriptions, and the strong plot lines are elements that are masterfully crafted to give the reader utmost satisfaction. This second book introduces characters that readers won’t want to leave behind.
