Return to Kiluemar is the first book in the Magic of the Realm series by Kimberly Marraffino. Fifteen-year-old Rhiannon Llewellyn's life turns upside down when her Aunt Kavana tells her that she's a powerful witch and the daughter of a Guardian, gatekeepers who protect the realm of Kiluemar, a hidden island full of magical creatures. She discovers that she has a twin brother named James Cassil, who was raised separately from her by Kavana's brother and their Uncle Pavian to stop the magic hunters from ever finding them. But they realize that magic has been seeping through the portals, and Merrick, a demonic humanoid vampire bat, has sent his henchmen to hunt down the twins because of their powerful magic. As the twins navigate their way to Kiluemar, they discover their own familial history and legacy.
An exemplary epic adventure fantasy at its finest, Return to Kiluemar fills you with a sense of wonder and awe only to be found in worlds created by the masters of the genre, such as J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Author Kimberly Marraffino builds a sprawling world filled with lore and history that makes it feel truly lived-in and dynamic. The characters have fleshed-out backstories, and it gives depth to their personalities. Marraffino takes her time to set up the world and her characters, but it only helps the narrative organically ease into the cast of characters and the deep lore accessible to the reader. If you're a fan of young adult epic adventure fantasy stories, you're going to love Return to Kiluemar.
