I was delighted to read this version of Merlin the Magician by Daniel Diehl in Revelations: The Merlin Chronicles Book One. Merlin has been concealing himself in a crystal ball for over fifteen hundred years, in order to continue his work to defeat Morgana le Fey, Arthur’s evil half sister. She wants to dominate the world and needs to capture Merlin to succeed. When archaeologist Jason Carpenter unearths the crystal ball, he realises Merlin is not a myth, and joins him to destroy Morgana before she destroys humankind. Morgana is not a woman people dare cross and she retaliates. Jason finds himself in an unusual battle. Merlin is surprised at how much the world has changed, and tries adapting by tasting pizza, watching television and driving in a horseless chariot. Can an old wizard behind the times and an innocent archaeologist match the powers of a sorceress who has had centuries to perfect her powers?

Although this is Daniel Diehl’s first fiction novel, he was successful in pulling it off. Revelations: The Merlin Chronicles Book One is an intriguing novel that made me lose track of time while reading. I enjoyed the suspenseful drama and creativity of this novel. The characters were impressive, especially Merlin and Morgana. Morgana was a real psycho, and Daniel Diehl developed her malicious personality so perfectly, which made this story more entertaining. The descriptive sequence of events connected well. I thought the conclusion was great, and hope for the opportunity to read book 2 in the series.
