J.A. Jance never fails to please her fans. Her latest book is Ring in the Dead: A J.P. Beaumont Novella. Beaumont is a very wealthy Seattle police officer, and a recovering alcoholic. In this novella, J.P. takes a look at a case from his past. His first partner was Milton Gurkey, aka Pickles. A phone call from Pickles' daughter brings back memories. She asks to meet with J.P. concerning some papers she found in her father’s basement while cleaning and sorting. The papers are an account of an old case he worked with Pickles back when Beaumont was just starting out. It was the case that sealed their partnership, when Pickles was not happy to be partnered with J.P. and gave him a hard time. Pickles had a heart attack and fell unconscious in a parking lot. When he was found, a dead body lay close by, and Pickles was holding the murder weapon. Pickles' career and his entire future depended on J.P.’s investigation.

J.P. Beaumont’s fans will especially enjoy Ring In The Dead for it introduces them to a much younger Beaumont. J.A. Jance has written over twenty J.P. novels. This one is short with less than one hundred pages. However it is a great lead-in for her next book that will also focus on J.P.’s past. I’m always amazed at how writers like J.A. Jance can keep the great ideas flowing. She never lets me down. The Joanna Brady series is my favorite but I truly did enjoy this book.
