Risk Factors is the story of Viv and Connor. Dr. Vivian Dane is a veterinarian with world famous wildlife parents who will never let her forget that she is just a “pet doctor” and a disappointment to them. Connor McKay is a handsome but gruff EMT. After being abandoned by his mother and wife, Connor doesn’t find trust an easy thing to give. The only people he lets in are his young daughter, Janna, and his foster parents and even then it is totally on his terms. When Connor and Viv meet initially, he thinks she is an incompetent nurse, but later finds her a warm and caring vet. Despite their initial attraction, Connor makes Viv feel she isn’t good enough due to his reluctance to trust her. Calisa Rhose does a great job of painting a clear picture of the insecurities both characters have that make a real loving and adult relationship difficult.
There were so many things to love about Risk Factors, but the best one by far was little Janna. Viv describes her perfectly as a “7-year-old going on 21” and she is as adorable as can be with her people and wild fashion sense. Connor and Viv were great characters, but at times I just wanted to shake them to make them realize they were perfect for one another. They both have careers that involve taking care of others, yet neither of them takes time to take care of themselves. Despite her issues, Viv is a strong woman with a soft heart and it was great to watch her finally stand up for herself and realize she is great as she is; and when Connor realizes it, I almost cried. Calisa Rhose truly brought these characters to life and created an evocative story of longing, love and desire.
