“Dogs stay with us for a while, but then they are needed up in Heaven to welcome everyone that comes there.” Sassie’s New Home is a beautiful story designed to help children understand and cope with the loss of a pet. The main character, Lanie, is a little girl who loves her dog, Sassie. The two share a bond and the love of a family. Over time, Sassie gets older and begins to slow down, until one day she passes away, leaving a lot of questions for Lanie. Lanie’s mom does an excellent job of explaining why dogs don’t live as long as people, and what happens after they die. This confusing and challenging time is made much more bearable for Lanie, and she is able to find peace in knowing that Sassie is in a better place.

Author Erin Albright has written an excellent story in Sassie’s New Home. It is a children’s story designed to help youngsters understand and work through the painful loss of a beloved pet, and it absolutely accomplishes its goal. I felt that Albright was very gentle and empathetic in the writing, and delivered the information in a way that is reassuring to children, and will give them peace and comfort when they need it. The illustrations, by Alexandra Hombs, are well-done and effectively complement the story. Overall, I am pleased with Sassie’s New Home and encourage all families with children and pets to read it.

Sassie’s New Home was the perfect book to help my kids understand the loss of our dog. What a wonderful story and explanation with the best illustrations! We still read it on occasion almost a year after losing our best friend, Duke.
