It is post-Civil War time in small town Hangtree where anything goes. Law and order is a dream and take-what-you-can and live with it is the norm. Principles are whatever wins out in a gun battle. The North and the South are still at odds but when Comanche raids turn into a full-blown battle, the town pulls together to save its very existence. Enter a Yankee in the form of Sam Heller and a die-hard Texan named Johnny Cross. Together they unite the town and appear to lay aside differences in order to come to the assistance of a threatened community.

It is no secret that William Johnstone is a master story teller. He entices the reader with bits and pieces of history and then brings in characters to bring that piece of history to life. Most readers will not feel there is a narrator in the story; rather they will feel a part of it, taking sides and cheering their heroes to victory. The characters think, feel and breathe a common air which unites them in cause and in spirit. They literally come alive to reenact a part of history that formed an independent and fierce nation. Although the author deals with a gory and aggressive part of history, he manages to infuse just the right amount of honor and humor so that the reader is proud to be an after-the-fact part of history. I don't particularly like Westerns but was captivated by this book!
