Savannah is an occult horror novel written by Brian Evans and Theodore Hamby. Valerie LeVeau was a well-known figure in Savannah. She was 77 years old and enjoyed her daily trips into town, but she did find that the behavior of some people was starting to bother her more and more as she got older. It could be someone who cut in line ahead of her, or that insensitive woman behind the counter at the Social Security Office who couldn't be bothered to hand Valerie's check over to her after chatting with a friend until closing time. Senior citizens were often overlooked and the everyday insensitivity of some members of the populace was ignored by most. Valerie was another matter altogether. She had power, you see, and if she had just a bit of pocket lint or a scrap of something belonging to the offender, they could find themselves in a world of hurt. After a while, Valerie's victims had increased in number to a degree that the Center for Disease Control and the FBI were alarmed. Why were there so many inexplicable cases of patients with strange comatose symptoms in one particular hospital?

Brian Evans and Theodore Hamby's occult horror novel, Savannah, is a fast-paced and entertaining tale about a senior who's not going to take it anymore. Valerie LeVeau's Voudon heritage makes her an intriguing and definitely different character whose penchant for punishing those who irritate her gets a host of government officials involved in an investigation that challenges just about everything they believed about the world. This is a darkly humorous tale that even features a few appearances by Baron Samedi wearing his trademark top hat. Brady LeVeau, Valerie's grandson and closest relative, is a marvelous, resourceful and courageous character who I'd love to see more of. Add in a suspenseful plot and some well-developed police, FBI and CDC investigative teams, and you have the makings for a first-rate thriller, which succeeds on so many levels. I had a grand time reading Savannah -- it's most highly recommended.
