Bethany Stahl has added another excellent title to her Save the Earth series. Save the Scraps is about composting and it starts with Alex and Mateo eating a healthy fruit snack. After they have finished, Mateo is ready to throw away the apple cores and grape stems when Alex stops him. She introduces him to her compost bin and her worm friend, Mr. Squiggles. She explains that the scraps they throw in the bin and swirl around, with the help of Mr. Squiggles, will turn into soil that will help plants grow. Mateo gets so excited that he starts picking up everything lying around the yard, but Alex explains only certain things can be composted. Mateo and Alex then work together to collect the right scraps for composting.

Save the Scraps is a wonderful addition to Bethany Stahl’s Save the Earth series. Composting is an activity that not only happens in people’s backyards but is now happening at schools across the country. Save the Scraps is an excellent introduction for kids in a simple way to show that they can make a difference. Bethany Stahl’s illustrations are warm and inviting and she always includes some extra details for kids to enjoy. Kids will be excited to try the composting activity in the back and see for themselves how those scraps become soil. Save the Scraps is a book that you will want to read for Earth Day, at the beginning of the gardening season, or anytime you want to inspire kids that they too can save our earth!
