Scarred is an incredible story by Elizabeth Montgomery, which literally took my breath away. Avery is a school student who has lived most of her life with being bullied due to the scar on her face left by many surgeries to correct a cleft palate. Her best friend is Dylan, whom she eventually falls for before discovering that he is gay and is also a victim of bullying. Avery's worst nightmare is the school’s chief bully - a girl named Harper who is beautiful, popular ... and is also the teacher's pet.

One day Avery overhears the football team at work, bullying her best friend, and she worries about Dylan’s safety. While attending class, Avery hears a siren in the background and quickly discovers the reason. Rushing to Dylan’s side, she is left in tears as he leaves the locker room, broken and bruised. Harper’s boyfriend, Blake, is the high school sweetheart who is always caught unawares as he stares at Avery. When he starts leaving her notes and sending her texts, she immediately becomes suspicious, not only because Blake is Harper’s boyfriend, but because he is also the reason Dylan needed an ambulance that day. After being so viciously bullied by Harper for so many years while Blake stood idly by, Avery cannot decide if Blake is setting her up for an ambush.

I have never found a book to be such a compelling read, and I am sure I will read Scarred many more times in my down time. Elizabeth Montgomery has a unique style of writing, enabling the reader to “become” Avery while reading Scarred. The twists and turns are constant and the impact that bullying has on a person, regardless of the bully’s so-called “justification,” is a real eye-opener. The ending was jaw-dropping, leaving me with mixed feelings of sadness and joy. Thank you, Elizabeth Montgomery, for giving me the opportunity to read and review such a wonderful book as Scarred.
