Sessions: A Psychological Noir by B.J. Thompson is a dark, disturbing psychological thriller that forces the reader to stay put on their seat and keep turning the pages. It is intelligently plotted and deftly written, featuring two compelling female characters as they explore each other's mind in therapy sessions. Dr. Moorhouse receives an unusual and intriguing letter from a prospective client, Mrs. Underhill, who wants her psychoanalytic services. In the letter, she spells out conditions in which she intends to work with the doctor, including paying off her debt. Dr. Moorhouse accepts her conditions, but is she ready to navigate the darkness of the mind of this client?

What starts as a curious request from a potential client quickly develops into a professional relationship that defies all norms, and through seven sessions readers are transported into the mind of a serial killer. This work is highly imaginative and the plot is ingeniously laid out. It is suspenseful, filled with intensely dramatic moments. The psychological implications of the story are laid out in the letter and the use of the epistolary style adds a new dimension to the narrative. From the moment the premise was introduced, I got hooked. I was also hooked by the power of the descriptive prose and the author's ability to make readers form mental pictures of the setting. Sessions: A Psychological Noir is gripping and thrilling to read. B.J. Thompson has what it takes to grab the reader's attention and make them root for the characters.
