Severed Knot is a work of historical fiction, suspense and drama penned by author Cryssa Bazos. Set during the year of 1652, when the British Empire was trying to recover from the devastating effects of the English Civil War, we follow the tale of a young Irishwoman who is stolen from her family’s farm and sold into servitude on a Barbados sugar plantation. Thousands of miles from her family and all she’s ever known, Mairead finds solace in the similar predicament of Iain Johnstone, a Scottish prisoner of war. What follows is a tale of freedom, bonding, and passionate romance, with plenty of fraught twists and frantic turns along the way.

Written for adults due to its mature content and the graphic nature of history at the time, this is an authentically gritty but also highly exciting and uplifting novel to read. Seventeenth-century Barbados comes alive with all its cut-throat glory and beautiful scenery, juxtaposed brilliantly against wartime and oppression. Author Cryssa Bazos captures this myriad of darkness with highly emotive language, and conveys the real pain and suffering her characters have to endure in their new lives as bonded servants. Mairead’s core strength is empowering and relatable, making readers root for her as she and Iain try to find their way back to freedom despite the immense difficulties that life throws at them. Overall, Severed Knot is a superb work of historical fiction sure to please readers looking for an authentic period atmosphere, romance, strength and plenty of danger.
