Shell Game: A Black Cat Novel by A.B. Funkhauser is a great book for cat lovers, a story that is laced with drama and humor. Meet Carlos the Wonder Cat whose life has been that of a carefree pet roaming his quiet neighborhood. But all that is about to change when a letter arrives from Animal Control with the stern warning that kitty owners who can’t keep their pets tamed and indoors will be heavily punished, and besides losing their pets, they’d have to pay a fine of $5000. But Carlos has no time to figure out what to do because he gets kidnapped by a dangerous cult. Is there a way for him to escape ? Can anyone, someone, help him out? Even if he were to get his freedom, where would he run to?
A.B. Funkhauser’s novel is a great, fun read, and the reader learns very quickly that they have no choice but to love the protagonist, Carlos. I enjoyed the beautiful prose with the awesome descriptions of the characters. The author makes the cat appear to be a wonderful companion, a character that, besides being entertaining, has a lot of qualities that humans will adore. The story begins with conflict and it escalates quickly. From the moment the home owner reads the letter, the reader is already alerted of an impending danger, but it isn’t what they’d expect. Readers will be absorbed by the story, by the intensity of the action, the depth of emotion, and the strength of the conflict. Shell Game: A Black Cat Novel is a novel you won’t want to put down, especially if you like cats.
