Sherlock Holmes, His Wife and the Hunt for Jack the Ripper is a suspenseful historical mystery by India Millar. She has written a different version to the popular Sherlock Holmes' mysteries by including a wife, Eleanor “Nellie,” and a daughter, Nona. Jack the Ripper has struck again and his latest victim happens to be a prostitute from Nellie’s past. The victim’s brother, Mattie, asks Sherlock to find the killer, but becomes infatuated with Nellie. When more prostitutes are brutally murdered, Sherlock realizes there is a connection to his wife. A frightening séance reveals clues that upset Nellie and bring the killer closer to her. She assists the detective with his investigation, but is wary of Sherlock’s watchful eyes as he uses her to lure the suspect.

In this adaptation, India Millar diverts from creating the typical portrayal of the famous detective who is a bachelor by placing him in a marital relationship. A few scenes are quite intimate and detailed, which shows another side of Sherlock Holmes and the type of woman he married. Nellie can be complex at times, but she is astute and supportive of her husband. It is a moderately paced story that will make readers speculate on the identity of the killer while getting a glimpse of what life was like in Whitechapel where the gruesome murders took place. The cover illustration is nice and suits the story well.
