Krista Wagner's thriller Shrouded Memory is set in Newport Beach and Balboa Island, California. Rian Field, 35, is a marine biologist, a professor of biological sciences at the Southern California Marine Institute. Her husband Jack, a former marine, runs a construction business. In 2015 Rian is in her cruiser near Balboa Island when she is attacked by a Great White shark. She barely survives. The shark chews a jagged hole right through the boat's center. The attack triggers memories of another terrifying traumatic event in 2013. She has nightmares of both events and suffers mental and emotional torment, all symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD. Rian undergoes counseling. The suspense grows as the action intensifies. Rian's struggle for life, her courage, and endurance are tested to the limit.
I liked Krista Wagner's Shrouded Memory for its remarkable character Rian and the complex web of intertwined threads of traumatic events and PTSD. I liked the suspense that arises from the terrifying life-threatening events themselves. I think Rian's nightmares and recurring feelings of danger, her paranoia, and tormenting fear are captured very well by Krista Wagner's vivid narrative and detailed descriptions. For me, Rian's PTSD became an intense undercurrent of tension and suspense in the story. I liked Rian's character development, her inner journey as she takes PTSD counseling and prays for help and courage. Rian's determination strengthens her to overcome her fear of the sea and of the shark. A well-crafted and intriguing thriller with great suspense; facing the challenge of PTSD and Rian's transformative journey!
