Sinner’s Road by Hugh Dysart is an enchanting collection of poetry that delves into humanity’s joys and sorrows and shows how, despite our tragedies, we continue to live on. The book is an amalgam of poetry dedicated to bringing together both innocence and decadence. From the musical phrases that illustrate the harsh realities of life, to the nostalgic tone that everything will come through in the end, the collection certainly does make the reader stop and think twice. With the memories of loneliness and the hopes of youth, Dysart truly does re-imagine our journey of life through loss, through despair, into a paradise filled with better dreams.

One of the phrases I absolutely adored talked about the way innocence cleanses. Oftentimes, we look at children or animals, who have absolutely not a care in the world, who are still basking in the warm glow of the sun. They aren’t touched by pain, nor do they know things that would keep them awake at night, or that would even trouble them. They don’t need to, because they’ve yet to start their journey down this road. And for others, the ones who aren’t as innocent, the ones who’ve matured into something monstrous, sinful, depraved, they can only hope because in the end “only God knows the way home.” There were a few poems where, although they sounded beautiful, I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. There were also a few poems that I felt were out of place. Nevertheless, I adored this collection. The soothing, yet alarming lines bring together ironies that mark humanity’s legacy. Dysart culminates humanity’s journey into one single poetry collection. As such, I would recommend it to those who enjoy poetry in general.
