Smelvis: The Two-Scent Skunk is written by Ernest Chambers. Smelvis is a skunk. But he's not like every other skunk. He's really quite different. First of all, instead of being black and white, Smelvis is purple with white stripes. This creates a problem for Smelvis. He stands out too much in the forest; he's easily spotted by both animals and humans who might hurt him. That frightens Smelvis. One day he finds refuge in a family's backyard. While enjoying the dog's food, he's frightened by the dog and sprays him. The family is not impressed. They're even less impressed when Smelvis decides to make his home underneath their house. Now the family is imprisoned in their own house. Smelvis is confused. He likes the family and he doesn't understand why they don't like him. The family huddles at the window looking out at Smelvis in fear while Smelvis looks up adoringly.

One day the family calls animal control to come and remove Smelvis. That really frightens the purple and white skunk and he really sprays the backyard, so much so that the entire neighborhood complains. But it's decided by the adults that Smelvis must go. The children come to his rescue. They rather like Smelvis. They venture outdoors and place Smelvis on the dog's pillow and start petting him. Smelvis likes being spoilt and he sprays his new friends. Only, this time he sprays something nice. Things might change when people smell this lovely scent. Can the family learn to accept and live with the differences and difficulties that Smelvis presents?

Ernest Chambers has written a delightful story about an unusually colored skunk. This story is very appealing with its colorful illustrations and its humorous plot. There is a lesson to be learned in this story, a lesson about differences and the importance of accepting everyone and everything for who or what they are. Well done!
