Sometimes When I’m Worried is a work of fiction in the social issues, self-help, diversity, and education subgenres. It is intended for young readers from ages four to eight years and was penned by author and psychologist Dr. Deborah Serani Psy.D., with accompanying illustrations by artist Kyra Teis. In a follow-up to the highly rated and deeply emotive Sometimes When I’m Sad, Dr. Serani explores the concept of anxiety in an accessible and relatable way for young readers. In a combination of gentle and easy-to-grasp descriptions and metaphors, paired with emotive illustrations, children are allowed space to contemplate and recognize their feelings, and then some practical advice is offered as to how to process them.

Author Dr. Deborah Serani Psy.D. offers such a useful tool for the parents of youngsters suffering from anxiety in its many forms and for educators who want to show their young charges that it’s okay to feel whatever they’re feeling and take space to recognize that. The illustrations by artist Kyra Teis give a superb visual reference, and they are gentle in their approach without over-dramatizing the feelings or making them feel silly or cartoony in any way. This sensitivity and acceptance follow through in every well-penned sentence of the work, and most especially into the adult guidance section on how to help your child feel empowered to handle and understand their own feelings. I sorely wish these kinds of books had been so well produced when I was a kid. Overall, Sometimes When I’m Worried is another superb work in an essential series for parents, teachers, and anyone who works with children to have in stock.
