Sera was born with a curse, or so her village believes. Only Adale is willing to befriend her, and it is a risk with dire consequences for both of them. On the run from the local authorities, Adale and Sera meet Gaius and Pen, two boys whose homes have been destroyed by a horde of demons that are rapidly emptying the land of all life. Entire towns are destroyed by the mysterious powers of a seemingly unstoppable enemy. As Sera and her small band of survivors flee, they inadvertently discover that they might have the only key to victory. With danger on all sides, they must overcome their fears as they head off on an adventure into a darkness that threatens to overtake their entire world. But the demons are watching and waiting.

Hoskins has created a fascinating and mysterious world that will appeal to a wide range of readers of fantasy. The characters are intriguing and interact with each other in believable ways. The plot is action packed and intense in parts. The novel is definitely in need of a good editing job, some of the dialogue needs tightening up, and there were a few gaps in a couple of the sub-plots; because of these issues, I was tempted to give it 3 stars. However, the overall story is captivating; its twists and fast pace kept me hooked and flipping the e-pages well past my normal bedtime! And that definitely is the result of a 4 star story. I’m now interested in reading the sequel!
