Carlisle has big dreams of being a world famous chef, but to do that she needs to win the local barbecue contest so she can pay for culinary school. Unfortunately, a mishap with ribs and barbecue sauce burns down the shed belonging to her landlord so, instead of winning tuition money, Carlisle is determined to win money for the shed. In Sparks Fly by Daisy Jerico, we follow Carlisle as she puts her dreams on hold to deal with her current responsibilities. But that’s just background. Daisy Jerico creates a bit of a mystery, which we find out when hunky fire chief Chet wonders if clumsy Carlisle is the arsonist keeping firefighters on their toes. The arsonist seems to have a personal grudge against Chet, but turns his ire on Carlisle when her little shed fire steals his thunder.

There is a lot to like about Sparks Fly. There is a really fun meeting between Chet and Carlisle and his gruff attitude adds just enough of an obstacle to keep us guessing about how the relationship will progress. However, it is a short story so the character development is short and leaves us wanting more. I did enjoy the way both Carlisle and Chet tried to deny their attraction and growing feelings, because it’s so much more fun to watch them fall after all of that fighting. Daisy Jerico did a good job of packing a full story into just a few pages. My only wish would have been that there was some indication of the arsonist’s presence before the big reveal, but it was still quite enjoyable.
