Author Biography

Iván Figueroa Otero M.D. FACS, FAAMA After graduating from the School of Medicine of the University of PR in 1970, Dr. Figueroa Otero trains as General Surgeon at the University Hospital of the UPR School of Medicine, integrating a one-year fellowship in the study of cancer, and one year in experimental research. Post-graduate studies in Pediatric Surgery, then follow at Miami Children's Hospital and the San Juan Municipal Hospital. Looking for non-surgical or less invasive options for pediatric conditions, Dr. Figueroa Otero explores Eastern philosophies that emphasize a holistic concept of disease. He was one of the first physicians to become certified in medical acupuncture in Puerto Rico, training in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture with professors from the University of Seville. Eventually he was certified in medical acupuncture nationally. In 2009, he became certified in anti- aging medicine and in December of that year he retired from the practice of pediatric surgery, focusing instead on a holistic medical practice and emphasizing disease prevention and modification of life styles. In 2011 he was invited to become a Trustee of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture, which is the national body organization responsible for certifying physicians in the field of acupuncture through national exams. In that same year he was recognized by Natural Awakenings magazine as Holistic Physician of the Year. Dr. Figueroa Otero is currently engaged in his private practice and continues in his role as an educator, trying to achieve full integration of traditional Chinese acupuncture courses in the curriculum of medical schools, promoting that physicians to be certified both locally and nationally, and to establish clinical research protocols on the use of acupuncture in known conditions compared to the methodology established by modern medicine. Another immediate priority is to incorporate spirituality and meditation techniques into the medical curriculum and promote their role in preventive and therapeutic medicine.

Acclaimed author Dr. Ivan Figueroa-Otero has done it again – after the success of his self-published first book, Spirituality 101, he has reinvented and updated his concepts in Spirituality 1.2: For The Disconnected from the School of Life, this time intended for the “tekkie” and the younger generation. Otero brilliantly bridges spirituality with science, using technological ideas and terminology (data, bits, RAM, the Cyber Network) as metaphors and analogies to philosophical and scientific concepts that are at times quite huge to grasp altogether. He does this smoothly in Spirituality 101, and does not disappoint in Spirituality 1.2. What’s more, his playful presentation (such as his tongue-in-cheek explanations, tests, reviews and final exam) easily opens up readers to better comprehension.

In Spirituality 1.2: For The Disconnected from the School of Life, Dr. Ivan Figueroa-Otero talks about a wonderful web of ideas that unfolds into an organized guide through “the Cyber Network” of one’s life. He begins with the Big Bang Theory retold in tech terms, weaves into origins, one’s purpose and identity, and a host of other ideas. Caricatures and charts fill its pages, making the book a fun read. More importantly, Spirituality 1.2 is highly insightful and offers its readers a unique perspective. While meant to reach out to younger audiences, it is nonetheless a great read for techies of varying ages, what with the ideas presented (and more so its accompanying realizations) being timeless and sound pieces of advice. It will not come as a surprise if the effects of his book become far reaching in the spirituality category.

Ivan Figueroa-Otero, MD, has attempted to write a textbook style book on spirituality. He expresses that his intent is to reach younger generations, who are "immersed in the cybertech world." With Spirituality 1.2 For The Disconnected From the School Of Life: A Review for Tekkies, you would have to be deeply involved in computer technology to grasp the concepts and metaphors that Figueroa-Otero expresses. Of course, in the early pages of the book, there is a glossary which is quite beneficial. And throughout Figueroa-Otero has shared little cute characters as symbols to let you know which parts of the book are important, will be on the exam, to use during meditation, and those that will cause suffering and unease. Throughout Spirituality 1.2 you will find homework assignments, bonus questions, and reflection/meditation exercises. Starting from an explanation of who we are and where we come from, Figueroa-Otero shows you how to move gracefully through life to the point of how to reconnect and return to what he calls the "Kingdom of Unlimited Date Use." He wraps up the book with a "Final Exam for the Dropouts in The School of Life."

Spirituality 1.2 is full of complexities that may leave you more confused than clear; therefore, be prepared to reread it a number of times. As with any new ideas or concepts, it is always beneficial to go over it a number of times. Figueroa-Otero even recommends within the pages of Spirituality 1.2 that you do exactly that with this book. The intent behind the book is an amazing one, and even if you find the terminology confusing or bewildering initially just take your time and settle into the message. If you happen to be well-versed in computer terminology, then this may be a fascinating and intriguing book from the beginning for you. It is well written, colorful and eye-catching. Breathe deep, settle into a quiet space, and open your heart and mind so that you may absorb and comprehend the complex ideas, computer jargon, and unique spiritual terminology. Spirituality 1.2 is a book like none other. Figueroa-Otero shares a rare opportunity on how to connect to and deepen your spirituality from a very modern perspective.

There are some questions that are as old as time. Curiosity about our origins, our purpose in life, and our final destination has always piqued the interest of everyone from the small child to the aged philosopher. Now, in Spirituality 1.2 For The Disconnected From The School Of Life, Ivan Figueroa-Otero presents his thoughts and opinions on these intriguing questions with language that our modern, technology focused world can grasp. Comparing life to computers and online socializing, Ivan Figueroa-Otero presents a funny look at serious subjects, making the adventure to self actualization that much more enjoyable.

If I had to describe this book in one sentence it would be: what a hoot! This was so much fun to read because the author took a unique perspective on an overwritten topic. Ivan Figueroa-Otero makes everything easy to understand, process and comprehend and delivers it in a fresh way that I believe will resonate with multiple age groups, starting with teenagers and going all the way to older adults. I gave it four stars due to the fact that there were some grammar issues that distracted the editor in me and I think some things could be trimmed back to perfection here, but it was overall a great read! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is in love with their apps, programs, or codings, and who is interested in the deeper questions in life. This is a riot of a read that I think you will thoroughly enjoy. I'm curious to see what the author of Spirituality 1.2 will think of next!
