Sweet Delights is a collection of 14 short romances presented by PL Harris. Each story is by a different author, and all are in response to the prompt of love stories centered around baked sweets. And each of these tales is a sweet in itself. None is more than a twenty-minute read, making the volume a perfect coffee table item or one to be carried for diversion in those in-between times. Each will also give you that nice little tingle of “the perfect communication” of love and attraction with those happy endings that make life worth living. Almost every gender combination is represented, each in an Australian setting, so if you’re not a native, have your Google at the ready to decipher some of the slang—dinki-di; bowser; hoon; pluggers; whoop whoop; jackeroos; barra—and that’s just from one story!
For me, getting a sense of Australian expressions was just one of the delights of this scintillating anthology. Each story creates a sudden meeting of eyes that sparks an immediate attraction in a titillating situation: to start the list, a kids’ cooking class, a school bake sale, a wedding, a pair of seniors at a supermarket, a fancy silent auction, a hiking accident, the transport of a wedding cake, and a weekend ball in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and the food? Sponge cake and peaches; strawberries and whipped cream; lemon meringue; mud cake and buttercream, Eton mess (British) among others. And the characters, and the places, and the …. I hope you get the idea. Sweet Delights, an anthology by PL Harris, is a treasure chest of Australian people, places, desserts, and, of course, the sweetest of all delights—romantic love. Fourteen authors, fourteen writing styles, fourteen matchups--what more could a reader of romance want?
