Taboo Tech by Joy V. Smith is a space adventure which starts after Lacie's parents take off to explore and she stays behind with her uncle. Life with her uncle isn't so bad and she gets to tag along on his ship until the Interstellar Guard comes for him and she's left on her own to make it back. Her return to the Space Academy comes with a new friend in the form of little Embers who was gifted to her from Sparkles. Once she graduates, she and Embers embark on their own adventures, including befriending a princess and discovering a villain hiding in plain sight.
Joy V. Smith weaves action and space exploration into an exciting adventure. The story is told from various perspectives, opening up different voices and experiences to help progress Lacie's adventures forward. Most of Smith's characters have a sweet innocence about them versus various dangers they may experience. One of the people Lacie meets is the princess Mai Kai who has an innocent nature which is seen in her lack of understanding certain common things because she's never experienced them. Sophie is another important person Lacie meets, who is the daughter of important figures and, as a result, is overprotected. These innocent characters give the story a light tone while upping the dangers Lacie ends up facing. Meeting Lacie and Mai Kai open up Sophie's world by giving her some freedom to have fun and have new experiences. The ships have a variety of fun names such as Flame Bright, Wasp, Quester, and Hammer which showcase the personalities of the different pilots. Taboo Tech is a fun young adult science fiction adventure perfect for those who enjoy journeys through space and delightful AI characters.
