Tani's Search for the Heart by Keith Egawa is a story that will enthrall children with its adventure, mystery, action and whimsy. Tani, a Native American girl, is heartbroken over the loss of her grandmother. She begins her journey, keeping in mind the wise words of grandmother, that is to search "for the heart of all things." Through the forests and amid all strange animals, Tani finds herself getting the answers for all her questions. Set against the backdrop of the Salish Coast, this book conveys a beautiful message to readers on humaneness and the connection that each one of us holds with our ancestors and the universe.

The book is filled with wisdom and it gives readers a wonderful message about the importance of keeping the environment safe. The animal guides that take Tani through the forests speak about the connection we humans share with the universe and how dependent we are on the other living things in the universe for our existence. This is an ideal book for children to read because, apart from the environmental message, it also speaks about the heart that lives inside each one of us. The culture of the Salish Coast is another interesting aspect of the theme.

The illustrations are nicely done, giving life and movement to the story. The valuable lessons about environment, animals, interdependence and the spirit that exists inside us makes the story profound and worth reading. The story also throws light on the Native American culture. A wonderful story book that has some wonderful messages for the young and old alike.
