Texas is more than just bluebonnets and bluebonnets are more than just blue. Sara Barnard invites the reader to waltz across Texas from Anderson to Zavala and El Paso to Wilbarger in The ABC’s of Texas Plants. The book is laid out describing species and varieties of some of the most unique plants native to Texas in an ABC fashion. With beautiful and unusual photos and stories of such plants as Cayenne Pepper, Golden Tickseed, Mistflower, Tahoka Daisy and Zizia Aurea (Golden Zizia) carefully lined up in alphabetical order, the reader is certain to find not only useful information, but delightful trivia to be shared with admirers. The index of plants by county and the map of Texas cities to help the reader get his bearings are an excellent addition, as is the story about Pink Bluebonnets and the Alamo. Since everything is big in Texas, it’s no wonder that one can find a list from A to Z of exotic plants there.

The approach and the way in which Sara Barnard exposes these silly, strange, and (sometimes) just plain weird plants is a delightful experience for the reader. The photos are clear and brilliant and a wonderful aid in identifying the plant that fits with each particular letter of the alphabet. The maps and county listings are a very necessary addition for such a guide. The legend of the pink bluebonnets, though an afterthought, actually wraps it all up with a twist that is uniquely Texan. This is a delightful, colorful, and interesting book. This is required reading for every Texan and all who might aspire to be one. Remember the Alamo!
