The Accidental Psychic by Carol-Anne Mason is the story of Annie Prior as she faces a life unlike anything she ever imagined. Annie was a normal woman before the train crash; however, that normalcy was taken away from her after the accident. Now she is a Medium and a Clairvoyant who attracts all kinds of spirits and souls. She never wanted to be a psychic, but now that she is, she has no other option but to accept it. However, the train accident was coming back to haunt her in the most devastating ways. The fact that her new abilities made her personal and professional life difficult was just too much for her. Her newly acquired powers were proving to be more trouble than they were worth. Or so, Annie thought. There was a purpose for everything, and Annie would slowly realize how important her powers were.

I love that the protagonist is called Annie Prior. Her name foreshadows that her life “prior” to the accident was no more and that she is now living a completely different life. The suspense was incredible, and I loved how Carol-Anne Mason built the whole story around it. The way Annie realized she could talk to and see spirits was emotional and very overwhelming. I had my reservations about the Spiritualist League of London and, of course, Mellion. That spirit was pure evil, and the author depicted that excellently. The fact that readers get a good dose of action with supernatural suspense really seals the deal for me. The narrative was smooth and so easy to read. There was nothing that made me feel like something was missing. The Accidental Psychic was brilliant!

The Accidental Psychic by Carol-Anne Mason is an enticing paranormal story with characters that feel real. After a train crash on her way to work, Annie Prior’s life is in tatters as she begins to understand that she has powers that have been dormant until then. She quickly learns that she has the abilities of a clairvoyant and a medium. The accident not only makes her discover her powers but also introduces Mellion, a priest whose death she witnesses and who turns out to be a malevolent and powerful soul who causes great havoc. Mellion follows Annie with threats as she seeks to help needy souls, including the souls of a group of children hiding in an old church. Who is Mellion and can Annie unravel the mystery about him before it is too late?

Carol-Anne Mason’s novel is engaging, well-plotted, featuring characters that are full-blown. The conflict is strong, and it exists at different levels. First, Annie is disoriented as she struggles to understand what is happening to her, grasping reality and learning to accept that she is no longer the person she used to be. The dynamics of her family relationships are brilliantly written. Getting involved with the dangerous soul of a priest is one of the things she couldn’t have imagined, and now the priest becomes her archenemy. The plot is filled with twists and unexpected moments, and as I read the story, I was curious about what would become of the characters. The Accidental Psychic is written in excellent prose; it features likable characters and phenomena that will have readers intrigued as they follow the story, wanting to find out what happens next to the characters they love.
