Salsa is new to the neighborhood. A shy, tiny chihuahua, Salsa is a little self-conscious of his size and his big ears. When he meets the neighbor’s dog, Chips, a friendly beagle, they instantly become friends as Chip introduces Salsa to all the dog friends at the dog park. Only the two big dogs are stand-offish and rude. But when one of the bigger dogs is injured, Salsa’s quick thinking saves the day and soon all the dogs, big and small, are best friends.

Cynthia R. Petillo’s picture book story, The Adventures of Chips and Salsa, is a charming book about dogs, but also about friendship. Size and looks don’t matter asTank, one of the bigger dogs, realizes when he proclaims, “Salsa, you are okay. I guess big things can come in little packages.” The plot is well orchestrated and the different animal characters are well portrayed. Each dog is different but very unique and special in his/her own way, just like people. This is more than a fun story about dogs at a dog park; it’s a story about accepting everyone for their own unique qualities. It’s a lesson learned by one of the tough, bully dogs, Tank. Salsa really is the hero as he demonstrates how important it is to help others, even those who may not have been nice to him, like Tank. The story is told in simple language to appeal to young readers and the colorful illustrations certainly help carry the action along. A simple story with a powerful message.
