Author Biography

Nathaniel Hicklin used to daydream a lot at work. Eventually, the daydreams got more and more elaborate, with recurring characters and ongoing plots, making it harder and harder to remember them. So he wrote them down.

112,000 words and lots of fascinating historical research later, here we are.

When Nathaniel isn't living in the world of Israel St. James, he's telling the stories of Ostreia and News from Crate, both available at patreon.com/sicsemperserpent.

He still daydreams at work.

The Adventures of Israel St. James by Nathaniel Hicklin is a fascinating YA adventure. Dr. Israel St. James, an immortal, is the only person who can gather the most powerful artifacts in history and keep them safe. He is blessed, or cursed, with Archimedes Insight and is the Keeper of the Archimedes Apothecary. He has the ability to see magic and the tools to find strange artifacts, no matter where they are or what they are capable of doing. Thirteen stories follow Dr. St. James on his travels through the 19th and 20th centuries, discovering artifacts and rubbing shoulders with the famous, seeing the devastation wreaked by war and the advances brought about by industry.

The Adventures of Israel St. James by Nathaniel Hicklin is very different. It’s a collection of 13 stories, each as weird and wonderful as each other. Every story is packed with historical facts, which adds an extra dimension to them and each is full of action and a dash of supernatural magic for good measure. The illustrations bring the book to life as you follow Dr. St. James’ narrative of his travels, interspersed with diary entries, in a fun adventure where each story is individual yet part of the bigger picture. There are lots of twists and turns and a fabulous ending and I guarantee you won't put this down. It’s a mixture of fantasy, supernatural, and history and it is a journey you will never forget. Although it is aimed at teens, it will grab the attention of adults too.

This book is such a fun read, and you learn some history along the way. I could not put it down. All 13 stories were are strong on their own, but together they tell a larger narrative about Israel's conquest to keep safe history's magical secrets. The journal entries between stories give more insight into the characters, and the illustrations depicted the most fascinating pieces of action. An indie gem, it's a shame more people don't know about this book.
