Susie told Boyd she didn’t love him when he asked her to marry him. They were young and they had only dated three months. Boyd had enough love in him for both of them. He assured her that someday she would come to love him.

Susie was from Eastern Kentucky. She and Boyd lived in Hamilton, Ohio with his mother and dad. Eventually they built a small house behind his parent’s home. After suffering a miscarriage and the loss of a baby Susie became very depressed. Several months after her loss she began to feel stronger. She went fishing and met an older gentleman. They formed a strong friendship. Each day she would go fishing or just walk down to the creek and visit with him. Slowly they were falling in love.

This is the second book by Jessamine Rose. Both books are based on her life. In this book, The Awakening Within, she shares her first love. In this book Boyd impressed me. He was very much in love with Susie. I cannot help but believe that he suspected she was seeing someone at the creek. Yet he was understanding, kind and caring. When her friend became ill he understood her need to be at the hospital and he offered comfort. The older gentleman taught Susie how to love. With her background I’m not sure she knew what love is.

I enjoy everything Jessamine Rose writes but I do encourage her to hire an editor. There were many mistakes throughout this short book: such as quite instead of quiet. The story is heartwarming. The love and friendship between the older gentlemen and Susie stayed innocent. It is not unusual in Eastern Kentucky for generations of a family to live together or at least close by. I can see where it would be very difficult for Susie to adapt to the situation. As parents we are all bossy and try to do what WE think is best for our children. If they live close to us we are even more forceful. I became part of this story. I hope someday to meet Jessamine Rose.
