In The Azure Kingdom, Michelle Dare introduces Alison Wescot, a reclusive divorcee who had just lost her mother. Left with no other family, Alison clings to her mother’s memory as best as she can by running the small furniture shop bequeathed to her. By night she meets her dream man in a field of magical azure flowers. Her humdrum life is turned topsy-turvy when two unlikely customers discover a secret compartment in an outrageously expensive piece of furniture. Inside she finds a gold key and a letter from her mother. The contents leave her reeling. The father she thought abandoned her is alive and lives in another realm. When she steps through the magical doorway, she walks right into the man she’s dreamt about for so long. Prince Lucas Azure is everything she ever dreamt about and more. Problem is, he also happens to be her father’s enemy.
The Azure Kingdom is a sweet modern fairy tale that reminded me of those long ago nights when I used to gaze reverently at picture books while my imagination flew away to distant lands. The magic of this tale is in true love conquering all things and the fickle key that appears and disappears at will. Though it rarely happens in real life, I do believe everyone in Michelle Dare’s story receives their own form of a happy ending. Who knows where that pesky key is going to land next time? If you’re looking for a happily ever after without too much fuss or sadness, this is the book for you.
