The Beer's Folded and the Laundry's Cold: Mostly-True Adventures In Housewifery is a book of humorous anecdotes written by Paige Kellerman. From the start, Paige announces that she is never getting married. Soon after she accepts a marriage proposal, she advises that she is never having children. Once the doctor tells her that she is pregnant with twins, Paige declares that she is never leaving her job, as they need the money. But as soon as she realizes that child care for the children will leave her with just five dollars from her pay check, Paige quickly decides to become a full time, stay-at-home mother. Paige’s creativity in making her own rules whilst on the job at home eventually leads to Paige’s self-designed uniform of elasticized pants with no zippers and, most of the time, wearing no bra. From one tale to the next, Paige talks about her hilarious life as a wife and mother, seeking out human companionship by calling out through her open window, only to be pelted with acorns by the local squirrels. Clipping coupons, juggling bills, and prioritizing the day’s tasks are just not what Paige pictured herself doing when she imagined her adult years.

I usually do not pay too much attention to the Introduction of a book, but this one had me in stitches. An author who can get me laughing before I start reading the first chapter is talented indeed. Paige Kellerman left me in awe, admiring the alluring glamour that is being a housewife and juggling the needs of her four children and husband in today’s society. I had never considered the monumental decision of whether or not to wear a bra while checking the mail or taking out the garbage, but this will be implanted in my brain for many years to come. The Beer’s Folded and the Laundry’s Cold is a perfect example of how undervalued and overworked a housewife can be, and the hilarity between the covers of this book is endless. I recommend this book to all under-appreciated mothers out there, or any women pondering motherhood ... or anybody who simply loves a great laugh.
