The Blood Stone is an exciting and ethereal work of fantasy fiction penned by author Jason J. Nugent and forms the first book of the Curse of the Drakku series. Entering the world of the dragon slayer, we meet the vicious and volatile Lailoken, a skilled hunter with an ax to grind against the dragons. When his beloved bride is abducted, Lailoken will stop at nothing to retrieve her, and so he takes on a quest for a fanatic who promises him vengeance if he will fetch a magical gem. But Lailoken’s veil of red begins to fall as he quests for the artifact, and he realizes that his thirst for vengeance may be being used against him, and for the purposes of true evil.

Author Jason J. Nugent has created a dark and exciting world of blood, guts, and magic that readers can dive straight into. Stripping away some of the more detailed trappings of traditional dragon-led epic fantasy, this is very much an adventure tale in a fantasy setting, which allows readers to get into the action in a cinematic, instantaneous way. Lailoken fits the mold of the traditional fantasy and fairytale hero, and it’s interesting to see how that initial approach shifts, and how he changes as the plot progresses deeper towards the dark heart of the truth. Common themes of love, vengeance, betrayal, and mystery are well handled to create an engaging plot with plenty of twists, making The Blood Stone a really enjoyable read altogether.
