In The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller, the scene is set in rural Iowa. Robert has been assigned to photograph the beautiful old wooden bridges, a vanishing piece of architecture. A chance need of directions, and Francesca being home alone, with her family away at the 4-H Iowa Fair, places these two souls at the same place at the same time. We used to subscribe to National Geographic and dream of the places that the beautiful photographs depicted. Robert Kincaid was lucky to be one of the photographers who took the pictures and traveled to these amazing places. Francesca, a war bride coming from Italy, was a farmer’s wife and mother of two children.

The Bridges of Madison County is not a new book, but I just finished listening to the audio version and it is still lingering with me. Putting myself back in this time and place is hard, and yet not unpleasant. With the moral values I have it is difficult to condone both Robert and Francesca’s actions, but on the other hand, I was rooting for them. You feel the tension in the air and know the passion they are feeling, but where can it go? The story played out rather fast and I was sad when it ended, but I enjoyed the epilogue. You can almost hear the song written for the passion. If you haven’t had the chance to enjoy this rather classic read, you should make some time and travel back to 1960 Iowa and a quieter time in American life.
