The Canaan Belt War is a work of fiction in the science fiction and Christian subgenres. It is intended for the general reading audience and was penned by author David Field. In this concise but captivating adventure set in the year 2137, we find ourselves on a planet Earth quite unlike our own. At war with an alien race called the Nivchar, a captured spy could hold the key to success. But when the highly agnostic soldier Paul Morphy is sent to rescue the spy alongside the evangelical Helena Sapphira, a series of shocking revelations occur. These realizations trigger the pair to examine their personal beliefs on a deeper level and may provide a unique solution to the war itself.

Working within the ideas and morals of the Christian faith can be a tall order indeed for a work of science fiction, but author David Field takes on that challenge admirably in this thrilling tale. I was especially taken with Helena’s character and her journey of reflection during the novel's revelations, which is more subtle than Paul’s transformation, but no less relevant or poignant as a result. The parallels and construction of the stories around Shiv’yon mirror Christianity in such a way that it sheds new light on the concept of faith and what it means to truly believe in God. Around this, the intergalactic war plot is well constructed to make some salient comparisons to humanity's destructive nature in our contemporary lives, which we all have much to learn from. Overall, I’d certainly recommend The Canaan Belt War to Christian science fiction fans seeking an intelligent and insightful read.
