The Cardinal Sky: Sky Saga Book 1 by M. K. Osmun inexorably sweeps the reader into a dystopian future where all electronics have been decimated by alien technology, wielded by a race known to humans as Cardinals. These aliens have remained an enigma to mankind over a long period, keeping predominantly to themselves and leaving disparate evolving civilizations to grow and coexist. Two key players become targets for these aliens, and in their race for survival, a tenuous bond forms between them. Sky and Ryan become increasingly dependent on this relationship as the heat intensifies. As they battle their way through numerous deadly situations, they learn more about each other, and the more they learn, the more they realize how little they know. The problem for each is trust, and in this foreign world, that could mean the difference between life and death. This is a first-rate action-adventure set in a highly believable potential future.

M. K. Osmun’s The Cardinal Sky is a smoothly crafted science fiction journey into the future, with a clear and well-determined plot and ample subplots to maintain a high level of interest. The characterizations and relationships are both precise and varied, with all the players having a suitable mix of gray. There were no purely black or white individuals in this book. I was particularly impressed by the relationship between Gray and Sky, which was quite intense but equally stormy, and also the smoldering growth of feelings between Sky and Ryan. These were done particularly well. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys quality reads about a possible future that we may all face at some time.
